Hierarchical Linear Modeling

Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) in PASW (SPSS) and R 

An example of HLM is available in PASW and the R package nlme below. The data used in the instructional guide is the National Center for Education Statistics’ (NCES) High School and Beyond (HS&B) public-use dataset.

The level-1 (student-level) variables are:

  • Math Achievement (mathach): a mathematics achievement test given to high school seniors
  • Socioeconomic Status (ses): a composite measure of social class

The level-2 (school-level) variables are:

  • Mean SES (meanses): school mean for SES
  • Sector (sector): description of whether students attended a public or catholic school
